Discipline: Big Mountain Freestyle Snowboarding
Program: Two days of competition: a backcountry-accessed qualifier and a rider-judged, helicopter-accessed final. Parties with the event/judging.
Prize Money: Men’s First Place — $10,000; Women’s First Place — $2,500. Riders: 75 Open Slots, 40 invited riders.
Edition: 4th annual running of this event.
Format: The contest qualifier will happen in an uncontrolled back- country location. The venue is generally a 1,000 vertical- foot face with untracked deep powder conditions. Riders take two runs with a combined score format and veteran judges.The top athletes make it to a final event that consists of a one-run helicopter-accessed contest. The final day will be a classic Alaska, “Big Hit” a 4,000+ vertical run that challenges all aspects of rider skills, with an emphasis on freestyle riding. The runs are filmed then judged by the competitors at an awards/wrap-up party based on freestyle moves, line choice, and control/fluidity.
Athletes: Since its inception, the WFC has been a proving grounds for the top riders in the world. Former competitors include Scotty Lago, Mike Basich, Travis Rice, Mark Landvick, Mark Carter, Sammy Luebke, Mikey Marohn, Dave Short, Shawn Farmer, Will Brommelsiek, Ralph Backstrom, Eric Themel, Max Zipster, Shin Biyajima, Shinya Nakagawa, Anne Flore- Marxer, Vera Janssen, Yoko Nakamura, Celia Miller, Sarka Pancochova and many others.
