Girlie Camp is the tits! Pardon the expression, but after spending a week with them for the Les Deux Alpes session we are convinced it's the best thing to happen to women's snowboarding since the advent of the sports bras. It was good to see someone taking the reigns and organizing a girl camp for girls, by girls and not just some pervy dudes like me.
It's too late to join in the summer-slush-slashing-female-week-of-shredding-your face-off this year, but let our little recap on what went down reassure you that Girlie Camp is definitely the place to be next summer. First of all, camp starts the same week of the epic snow-ninja throwdown known as the Kumi Yama, so the campers witnessed an amazing level of park ripping, inspiring them to up their shredi master skills and chuck it off the big booters one day. Plus, the park was extra crispy clean for the contest so glacier was looking like a million bucks.
Every morning the girls cruised up the Martian-like Deux Alpes summer landscape all the way to 3600 meters. Everything is run at a mellow pace and there is no rush to start throwing your bones off the pro line kickers. The main driving force of Girlie Camp is progress. The group is split into two: the first is comprised of girls who are brand new to the park and still working on getting their first taste of sweet air or laying down 50-50s on boxes and riding away in one piece.
The second, more advanced group focused on getting their rotations down and locking in board slides on some of the more advanced jiberoos. But it's not like the chicks were just left to run loose blindly and miraculously started pulling threes for the first time.  Girlie Camp coaches include Lolo, Jenny, and Suray and believe you me, they all know how to get "gnarsty" in the park. They hang by the jibs/kickers and tell you exactly what you're doing right or wrong. Coaching, basically.   So with a little advice from the coaches, the girls were stomping new tricks after a few hikes and a couple of hucks. Sending it off onto the air bag was a definitely a good confidence booster as well.
At about 1 o'clock campers would leave the glacial winterland and return to summer in the valley below, where fun times reigned throughout the afternoon. Every day there was something new to get into. Some days girls were learning to pop their first ollies on skateboards. Other days strayed from the usual freestyle path, and the girls had a whack at golf and even learned some survival skills at the archery range.   The girls also spent time reviewing their riding footage and photos, and also learned how to save some money by tuning their own boards. Every night after dinner the girls mobbed out, terrorizing the town and the Spanish boys. I don't really know all the details but I think some of the ladies walked away with new special friends.
By the end of the week the girls had all raised the bar on their riding, and conquered French cheeses that smell like grandpa's socks. Everyone left with slushy smiles and sweet google tans to show off to their friends back home. All-in-all, the girls bagged some new tricks and had some good times with new girlfriends. Now if that damn season would just come around, because the winter beast is still months away...
