2013 O'Neill Evolution Mega Post

This past weekend was special in many ways. It not only marked the first month of humankind's continued existence after the Mayan Apocalypse (miraculously?) failed to make an appearance, it also was to be legendary Swiss rider and snowboarding's first-ever Olympic Gold Medalist Gian Simmen's last dance. Yep, this year's pipe contest at the O'Neill Evolution, one of the year's biggest and most respected events on the World Snowboard Tour, was the last time Gian would ever don a contest bib as a professional snowboarder. That said, there was definitely a festive vibe, with tons of industry heads and legends making their way out to Davos for the big bash. Unfortunately the snow conditions weren't as ridiculously awesome as last year's Evolution, but at least this time everyone was actually focused on the contest instead of snorkeling through chest-deep pow.

And what a contest it was! Some of the craziest stunts ever landed at a big air event went down, including a triple frontside rodeo from Kyle Mack and Maxence Parrot's winning BS 1440 triple cork. Trust us, it was BANANAS!!

Here's some pictures, moving and still, of the 2013 O'Neill Evolution, big thanks to Jan Michaelis and Daan Meijer @ O'Neill for taking such good care of us all week, see you guys at next year's event!

oneill.com/evolutionWilkommen in Davos!Die Schweiz, land of chocolate, cheese and Calanda! Oh, and also microshreds like this. Little dude is hardcore, riding hardboots in strap bindings, he just wants to go SHRED!Always good to see old friends! Burton's Hasi and Volcom's Jan Prokes are pillars of the European snowboard community and really awesome humans.Torgeir Bergram was also there, homie got hurt but he was going OFF all week! Heal up fast, buddy! But it was really Gian Simmen's show, what with it being his last-ever contest as a professional and the Legends Session in his honor.Local hero Jan Scherrer huckleberries one around for the WIN in the Men's Pipe Final! Photo: David BirriHard to believe it's been 15 years since Gian took home the first-ever Olympic Halfpipe Gold in Nagano. One thing's for sure though, homeboy's still got it, MEGA tabletop method at his last-ever pro contest for a very respectable 6th place! Photo: David BirriThe lovely Verena Rohrer took first place for the girls, tip grab meat helicopter to W! Photo: David BirriKyle Mack, Jan Scherrer & Hiroki Suwa poppin' bottles! Clemence Grimal, Verena Rohrer & Akiko Milwa stoked on making the podiumWe celebrated our friend Danny Burroughs' narrow escape from an avalanche earlier that day with massive steaks and even bigger beers for dinner. Glad you're safe and sound, homie! The next day started off with a bang: the Legends Session! The legends came crawling out of the woodwork for Gian's big going away party. World Snowboard Tour President Reto Lamm, radical momma Nici Pederzolli and the one and only Michi Albin.Drew on the mic during the rider's meeting, just like back in the good old days!WST Judge Guillaume Morrisette was wearing the same kit he rocked for his legendary part in Robot Food's Afterlame, how sweet is that?. He also did what we thought was the raddest trick we've seen in a while, a super late FS 360 lien in the dude tube,so fucking rad!Old homies, Steve Gruber with some proper Bavarian style rocking the leather tassels on his camo jacket, Albin again and Absinthe's own Patrick Armbruster. This is nothing, Drewster was in a varied state of undress throughout the week (even in brutal -20 celsius conditions), which led to many layers of permanent marker on his birthday suit. Also a WST Judge, Pascal "Easy Pi" Imhof was CRUSHING the pipe, giant pop tarts, fully flapped inverts, massive straight airs, seriously we feel lucky to have been there to witness such an awesome display of style and finesse. The Voice of Snowboarding, the protagonist of Jackson's Hole, the man, the myth, the lower appendage: Henry Jackson! Here he is doing his thing with Gian, thanks for being so awesome homie, we love you!Gian busted out some vintage outerwear for his last hurrah, look at the height on that backside air! Photo: David BirriGian double overhead FS stiffy, putting those old knees thru the paces! Photo: David BirriGuillaume was the only person we saw hiking the pipe instead of taking the drag lift up, keeping it old school! Then it was time for the main event! First up were the girls, with Miyabi Onitsuka taking first, Austria's Christine Szumovski in second and Celia Miller from the US in third.Next up were the men (well, mostly boys, to be honest). Markku Koski is one of the few older riders who can keep up with today's generation of super rippers. Homie didn't make the super final, but he was sending it over the massive jump with his trademark style and perfect arms. Photo: David BirriMaxence Parrot is a 17-year old Quebexican with some ridiculous shred skills. This is mid-triple cork, look how composed he is. Respect! Photo: David BirriFellow Quebecois Seb Toots was his usual flawless self, but just couldn't get past Kalle Jarvilehto in the super final, ending up in 4th despite landing a cab 12 double. Photo: David BirriLocal favorite Markus Mathis couldn't get past Norway's Emil Ulsletten in the third round but ended up the highest placed Swiss rider. Photo: David BirriIt's remarkable how poised and focused Kyle Mack is for a 15-year old. After taking a horrific slam on his second jump of the super final, Kyle came back to stomp the shit out of a never-before-seen-in-competition FS triple rodeo 1440 for second place. It boggles the mind to think what he will be doing in a couple of years time... Photo: David BirriMaxence Parrot with the winning trick, a BS 1440 triple cork mute, the first ever landed in a European contest! It's crazy how technical things are getting, pretty soon triples are going to be stock tricks!Kalle Jarvilehto (in the foreground) REALLY impressed us with his style, look out for this young Finnish ripper!Maxence is a WINNER!O'Neill went all out this year and brought in an AC/DC cover band called the Ball Breakers, one of the greatest cover bands we've ever had the pleasure to see for the big afterparty. The singer sounded exactly like Bon Scott, it was uncanny. We all drank way, way, wayyyy too much, as tends to happen at these things. I don't remember much after this...There are a bunch of photos on my phone from the afterparty, but none of them are tasteful enough for general consumption. Sorry, kids. This shot of some weird dudes dressed as the Power Rangers is the best you'll get outta this. Here's one last highlight reel from the whole event, cuz why the hell not. See you guys next January in Davos!
