Boys Nite do Happy Hour

Sausagefests are held in disdain for reasons beyond us.  It's BoysNite and the feeling's right.
Colorado based crew BoysNite evolved to become an institution in the North American shredosphere. We spoke to the mastermind behind the project, Brendan Barry, about Colorado stereotypes, skeletons in the closet of our editor-in-chief Mike Goodwin, the new movie, and the good times with the homies.

You've been filming snowboarding for a long time, but in case someone is unfamiliar, briefly introduce yourself and explain what you've been pointed your camera at the last couple years.

Hey, I’m Brendan Barry. I grew up and currently live just outside of Boulder, CO. I have been filming skateboarding and snowboarding with my friends for about 10 years now

Would you rather go bowling or bowl-ripping on a typical BoysNite?
I would way rather go bowling. We have yet to have a night out bowling with all the boys.

Favorite Drinks on a BoysNite?
A cold beer pairs nicely with a shot of alcohol.

Who runs Jeff Holce's like page on FB?
I have no idea! Andrew Nagel or Alex Cato maybe? In all reality Jeff Holce probably runs it himself. He’s a great human and is dedicated to all his fans.

Your favorite stereotype about Colorado?
The weed stereotype is sadly accurate and there’s an abundance of embarrassing stoners here, but it’s awesome how relaxed pot laws are. I don’t personally smoke much, but it’s pretty backwards to criminalize a plant when there are more corrupt things in our country that are legal. The CU and summit county snow bro stereotype is spot on as well. There’s a lot of bros and weirdo’s here, but there’s definitely a bunch of homies and cute girls.

There have been a number of cool DIY projects to come out of Colorado in the past handful of years. Why do you think Colorado still gets all the shit-talking?
First off, go watch Back to the Boneyard because it is one of the sickest videos ever.
It’s easy to talk shit about anything.I think a lot of people have a preconceived judgment about Colorado without ever even experiencing the place themselves.
There is beautiful places everywhere, great people and a low key snowboard and skateboard community. The scene is pretty small here so most spots aren’t crazy blown out like other places.

Hate all you want and stay away from here, I don’t like being around negativity anyways.

Are there any rowdy party scenes in here from "The Hill"? We know those Boulder co-eds like to keep up the horny vibes.

No, I tried not to put too much partying in the actual video because I wanted it to be appropriate for all audiences. If you watch the bonus, there’s some hijinks footage deep in there though. The best footy is probably the stuff from New Year’s Eve 2014. We should have just gone out and partied but instead tried to hit a spot and it was a complete disaster. Broken light stand, broken window, Tent broke his finger, and two bungees snapped. All as separate accidents. Oh, and Squiggs bought this bottle of champagne with a fake cork that didn’t even pop as the clock struck midnight. That was the last night I saw Timmy Tron..

Got any dirt on Mike Goodwin? We wanna know what our editor in chief is hiding from us.
No ,Mike Goodwin is a really smart, hardworking and talented dude and deserves a raise in the first quarter of 2016. Haha. A funny story was at the first Snowboard on the Block he was managing all the bands for the event. Pentagram was playing and Bobby Liebling demanded a blowjob from a short blonde girl with big tits or he wouldn’t play. Mike walked up to Taylor Boyd and dead serious asked “Do you know any sluts here?!” It was crazy how stressed he was. Pentagram still played and it was one of the best shows I’ve seen.

Do you often find yourself trying to explain to people how fast the snow melts in Denver?
That is one annoying thing. The weather fluctuates from hot to cold here so crazy. Even when you get 12” of snow in the city it’s always a rush to hit rails because it will more than likely be 50 degrees tomorrow. It’s kind of nice in a way because you try and hit the best spots you know of and then take a break and hopefully it will snow enough next week to film again.

Where else did you guys travel to make this movie?
Personally I stayed in Colorado the entire time while serving tables and finishing school. I filmed what I could around my schedule on free days and somehow it worked out well.

Making riders happy since.. Shot by Ryan Bregante.

We started filming the first things in Grand County/Winter Park. Then hit spots around Denver and about mid-winter got a good storm and went to Colorado Springs which has the best spots ever. They had about 8 inches of snow initially and then had another storm pile on top during winter break from school. It was awesome, a big crew of us stayed at Andrew Brewer parent’s house who welcomed us with so much hospitality. Huge thank you to the Brewer family who let us stay while we filmed like half the video!

At the same time as the Colorado Springs trip Chris Sypert, Greyson Clifford and some friends drove from Denver to Syracuse and back hitting spots and taking advantage of the epic east coast winter.
The video would have never happened if it weren’t for all the filmers who helped donate clips as well. Thank you so much to all the friends who were down to contribute shots, you know who you are.

You've got a good mix of riders in BoysNite, some "bigger" than others. What was it like getting all these guys together?

It all just happened naturally without a set plan. We had no name for a crew or even an idea to make a vid when the winter started. It just began with filming Jackson and Kit in Winter Park. Then I saw Jeff Holce post a status on facebook talking about how he was in Vail and hated it (he spends winters in SLC). I commented on it and told him to come to Winter Park. He filmed a few things there and then came back twice to Colorado throughout the winter to get more clips. Kyle and Chris were two friends that I have always wanted to film with and we ended up hanging out a bunch this winter and they both got a bunch of footage. Greyson was always around as well snowboarding and helping film. Grey introduced me to Brendan Sullivan and I invited him to come on the Co Springs trip after knowing him for about 6 hours total. Ben Bilodeau and Max Tokunaga drove out from Salt Lake when they heard we were staying at Andrew Brewer’s house. At some point through the winter I realized we were going to have enough for a full vid with people having parts. Jackson and I would always yell “boys nite” on nights when we knew we were going to do some heavy drinking. I kind of just thought it would be a cool name for a vid and started running with it. At the end of winter homies ended up hearing we were making a video and had clips that weren’t getting used. I got a lot of late footage this way that made the video much stronger. We never intentionally tried to build a rider list for the video, it just kind of worked out that people would be around and schedules would align for us to film.

Should we be expecting any new members of Boys Nite this season?

Anyone who is down with the boys is welcome to hang. I’m sure there will always be a dynamic group of characters in any video we make.

There are tons of rippers in this film, but let's talk Jack Kyle for a second. How is this dude still so underground?!
Jack Kyle is king. He’s underground because he’s the most modest and humble dude ever. He fucking kills it and has always done his own thing. Someone should take him to ride pow in Japan. Special thank you to Malachi Gerard and Mia Lambson for filming Jack’s footage this winter and letting me use it for the vid.

How can we get our grubby little fingers on a copy? (or digital copy)

www.boysnite.bigcartel.com All the cases are handmade and took me a while to make. There’s about 10 copies left and I don’t plan on making any more..
