Defending Awesome with Mark Dangler

One of the most anticipated movies of the year will be dropping in September. We caught up with the man behind the lens Mark Dangler to get the inside lowdown on the new CAPiTA movie. This was Mark's first big project and it looks like he nailed it. With a last name like Dangler, some things just come naturally to him; not only did he dangle the camera around his neck all season he dangled plenty of carrots to the crew promising ender parts and lucrative sponsorship incentives... Read on and find out more!

Hey Mark, how would you describe the new CAPiTA movie in one paragraph?
I guess I could give the "back of the box" type description but personally I’ll just say I think CAPiTA has an amazing team. It’s probably a given that I would say something like that but honestly, you have a lot of diversity in there and these people are the best at what they do. For instance, Dan Brisse takes the X- Games gold for the Real Snow video competition and you have Scott Stevens who is on top of the creative side of the game. You can’t get any more different than their styles but they are the best at their approaches to snowboarding and they have a great respect for each other, so the team meshes well. No two parts in here are going to be the same and that’s what I like.

This movie has generated a lot of hype and is very much anticipated, are you nervous?
Ahh, I don’t know if I would say nervous. I was super excited about it but I definitely put a lot of pressure on myself. This was my first big project and you have Absinthe, Transworld, Think Thank, etc alumni on this crew. I wanted to try my best to be at the level that they were used to. Now that it’s all over I am not nervous.

How did you get involved in this project?

It was pretty much Scott that helped me out big time there. I knew him from working at High Cascade. He told me about the project and asked if I would be interested, and then put me in touch with Blue Montgomery. So yeah, basically, thanks Scott!

How was it traveling with Dustin, Brisse, TJ, Scott Stevens, Cale and Hades?

It was a lot of fun to get to know everyone this year. Each person contributes big time, whether it be Dustin helping me sledding in whistler for my first time or Cale providing non-stop comic relief. I’ll just say that although a lot of people might think Brisse is some super serious gnarly dude that just jumps over crazy stuff, he’s secretly a comedian. He had the whole team crackin' up at the Transworld Team Shoot-out and on our end-of-the-season camping trip.

Did you choose all the destinations to shoot or how did it work?
It would always be sort of a group discussion with the riders.

Describe a typical day filming for the CAPiTA movie?
Mandatory coffee stop in the morning. Then we would have a rail, street or jump spot planned from the night before, go there and shoot it. Depending on if it was a successful day, maybe a couple of celebratory beverages.

Who’s part is going to blow our minds?

I mean, honestly, you are going to want to watch all of them. With that said we have some veterans on CAPiTA I know people are looking forward to seeing, but don’t sleep on Brandon Cocard and Mike Rav. They won’t disappoint.

Did any of the riders try to bribe you for longer parts or end sections?
Haha, no there were no bribes going on.

You used Red Fang as the song to the teaser, so rad. Do you choose all the music?

Blue and myself chose all the music. We have different tastes so it's good because I think it balances out well. I think we came up with a good soundtrack.

What was the craziest thing that happened while filming?
Watching Cale escape near-death multiple times. When we were in Quebec we went sledding at the resort on New Year's Eve. Everyone was going down a hill on the terrain park run. Phil and some other guys were stopping people if they came too close to a down ledge on a staircase feature at the bottom of the hill. Everyone had finished sledding pretty much when, sure enough, down the hill comes Cale. Phil tried to stop him but missed and Cale launched off the front of this down box, flying down the icy hill. I basically thought we were going to the hospital, he went head first into the thing! Everyone kind of gasped for a second, then Cale pops his head up and just says “whoaaa, I wallied that shit!”.

Have you got a crazy Dustin story for us?
Mike Fikowski, one of our other filmers, was with Dustin most of the year. I know he has some good ones. I don’t know if you saw the 8 Mile teaser? I just watched that, haha!

Did you ever fuck with the guys and say you missed the shot?
Not too much, maybe the occasional “ohh, somehow all your footage got deleted from my hard drive”.  Really though, some of them found out that I kind of get stressed out when people mess with me, so it was more the other way around.

Did you ever actually miss the shot?
For sure a few times. Don't want to talk about it.

How many times did the cops bust up your sessions?
I don’t think we really had it too bad. I can only remember a few times in particular, but nothing out of the ordinary, it's all part of the game.

Any secrets you want to reveal about the movie?
Awesome will be defended. That’s not really a secret though.

When does it drop?

September. In stores and online.

Shout outs?

Can I say first thanks to my parents because they are super supportive of me. Also, thanks Blue for giving me the opportunity.
