Perfect Balance - DCP And The Balance Movie

The Balance Movie features the aristocracy of backcountry riders, their surfing and skating friends and their personal pursuit of happiness. It's not just about finding balance between sports but between yourself and an unraveling world that's ever more preposterous and superficial. We spoke to the mastermind behind this 2-year mega project, DCP, about the filming process, the upcoming premiere tour and how to find balance in a world out of joint.

PSA: The Whistler section of the Balance Movie is going to be released here on methodmag.com tomorrow (9/9/15). The full movie can be viewed tomorrow at vimeo.com/ondemand/thebalancemovie. Read our talk with DCP below.

DCP - matters for the boss

- The balance movie shows a unique perspective on Snowboarding. How did your own perspective on board sports change during the years? Do you appreciate certain things more than before?
I‘ve been snowboarding for so many years, I used to compete in half pipe and slopestyle events and I really enjoyed doing that . I was always the guy hiking for 1 more run, running up for 1 more 1 hitter , until this one day FIS decided to fine me and disqualifying me from the event. That was my last contest of that sort and since I ve been filming, getting creative with natural terrain and backcountry jumps. 9 years ago , I became a father and it changed my perspective a little, I waned to make sure to make it back home safe even more then before. I like fun snowboarding . My favourite is deep pow and cracking Methods and riding with my kids and seeing them get the bug . Whether it’s surfing, skateboarding or snowboarding. Passing on my passion makes me feel extra good.

- You've got half of the board sports aristocracy lined up in your movie. How did you get in touch with all the skaters and surfers?
The surfers that filmed for the project I had met over the years and I feel very grateful that I got to spend time with those guys on Vancouver Island, they took me to their spots and watching them surf was a bliss. They are so good. Every wave they take , they tear it up.

Globe lined up the skaters, it took some convincing but at the end of the day, we had the sweetest trip and all those guys are so humble , kind and such badasses . Appleyard is such a legend .

- You have more than 20 stops in the US and Europe on your premiere tour. Are you gonna attend every single one of those? How big is the hangover gonna be?
Yeah, Im lined up to attend every event, got my travels lined up… Ouff, I know I will need to keep a good Balance and not drink too much … US events is 10 stops in a row , we are driving the ZEAL Airstream and camping along the way too.
Nico knows balance.
- Which of the other riders are gonna be in the premiere tour crew?
Austen Sweetin, Romain de Marchi, JP Solberg, Nico Mueller, Temple , Benji, Peter Devries and Sepp are gonna attend to some of the events… I m working on getting some of the skaters to some stops… we ll see .

- You are producer, narrator and director of the movie. Who was behind the cam? Did you get shots from all over the world or have you been there yourself?
I ‘ve traveled to every location we shot, it's been a big couple years. Especially last season we wanted to stay around Whistler mostly and it was the worst season in history. But, you gotta go with the flow and adjust and we got to go to Switzerland and link up with Haakon and Nico, this was amazing! Paul Watt is the main filmer and co director, and co producer along with the other dudes from Whistler Creek Productions .

- Tell us a little more about the whole production process. How difficult is it to get all the footage together and make it look that amazing.

Paul Watt is the editor , he s got the eye and he makes it look amazing. I ‘ve been helping and reviewing but it s definatly a lot of fofoatge that we gathered in 2 years so the hard part is to cut some great footage because you have too much . Paul spent the last 3 months editing and I ve been helping him via facetime, dropbox folders, notes and reviews . I ve been working mostly on the back end of the project. Tour, Artwork, promotion, sponsors, etc.

- How important are snowboard mags for keeping the culture of board sports alive?
I think that Mags are the essence of snowboarding. I still read a copy of a magazine cover to cover, take it on the plane, you know. I think Mags are the media of our sports and they're genuine. The Internet is killing that vibe a bit for sure.
DCP is about to tittyf*** this wave.

- Do you think there is a scientific explanation why it feels so much better to be standing sideways than on skis or rollerblades?
I think it s preference but for me and my family, we are definitely the sideways family. Skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding . That’s what my kids grew up seeing and we are so passionate about it so there s no way around it for them … They wanna stand sideways . I ‘ve always joked with my daughter that I would get her any skateboard she wants but if she wants rollerblades , she would need to get a job. She got a ripstick when she was younger … still sideways but now she s skateboarding more
