After watching Arthur Longo in the exhilarating first part of Markus Keller's CHAMäLEON movie we found ourselves wondering why we don't see more pipe riding like this. We are now involuntary forced to stare at logo plasted banners covering the entire length of the halfpipe while riders try to squeeze in one more desperate rotation when they should infact be spreading their run out with a shit-ton more style. Well, that's just like our opinion, man.
This is what he had to say. (We included his original answers for our French readers out there.)
What is your main motivation to participate in the Olympic Games?
I've asked myself this to the point that I don't really know anymore. But I think the most motivating thing is that it's only every 4 years and the best (let's hope) snowboarders should be there to compete. It's the only contest where people outside of snowboarding, like my grandparents watch. It's important to keep my grandma happy as well.
A force de m'interroger à ce sujet je ne sais même plus. Mais je pense que ce qui est le plus motivant c'est que ce soit tous les quatre ans et que le meilleur snowboard devrait être représenté (espérons). C'est la seule compéte que des gens en dehors du milieu du snow comme mes grand parents regardent. Je trouve ça vraiment cool de pouvoir aussi faire plaisir à ma grand mère.
Did you train intensively for Sochi or do you just shred like you would any other season? Are there certain training plans and diets to abide to?
I stopped filming. I have been riding a lot more pipe than usual, I've found myself in the gym sometimes, I cruise the organic isle at the supermarket, I don't party with my friends that much and I got a road bicyle. Basically, I've become pretty lame. Ha.
J'ai arrêté de filmer, j'ai fait beaucoup plus de pipe que d'habitude, je me suis retrouvé dans des salles de muscu parfois, je parcours les rayons bio des supermarchés, je ne fais plus trop la fête avec mes potes, je me suis acheté un vélo de course… bref je suis devenu relou.
Any claims on what tricks you want to pull or tricks we might see others pulling?
I am not going to completely revolutionize the way I ride just for this. I understood quickly that style and amplitude still pleases the judges so I am concentrating on this instead of trying moves that I don't really have in my bag of tricks. It's not easy learning new moves at 25 years old, so I just crossed off those tricks from my list that I am never going pull off. But, I do hope to include a switch backside double rodeo at the end of my run, but I can't guarantee anything. I just want to do a run that feels good and above all, a run that I will have fun putting down.
Je ne vais pas révolutionner ma façon de rider, j'ai assez vite compris que la hauteur et le style plaisent encore beaucoup donc je me concentre pas mal la dessus au lieu d'essayer des figures que je maitrise mal. Ce n'est pas facile à 25 ans d'apprendre des nouveaux mouvements donc j'ai tout simplement tiré un trait sur quelques figures que je n'arriverai pas bien à faire de toutes façons. Mais j'espère pouvoir inclure un switch double rodéo back à la fin de mon run, il n’y a vraiment aucune garantie à ce niveau là. Je veux juste faire un run que je me sens bien de faire à ce moment là, je veux me faire plaisir avant tout.
What do you think about the Lacoste national team outerwear?
I don't really care. At Vancouver they were the worse thing you could imagine and in the end we had a good laugh the whole time because we looked like idiots. The new ones are much more classic, more French, less funny, but I am eager to see what we are going to look like in these get-ups.
Je m'en fouts un peu, à Vancouver on avait les pires fringues que tu puisses imaginer et au final on se marrait toujours parce qu'on ressemblait à des guignoles, c'était cool.Celles-ci sont beaucoup plus classiques, plus françaises, ça me paraît moins drôle, mais je suis quand même pressé de voir la dégaine qu'on va avoir là dedans.
Does the country of Russia intimidate you in any way?
I have traveled a lot thanks to snowboarding and realize that in rich nations things are fairly "normal". Russia is a bit different. It's definitely feels a little more intimidating and unfamiliar from what I am use to. I know very well that I am not going to discover the Russian culture and lifestyle in Sochi. What I will see in Russia is simply Sochi and not the real Russia.
J'ai beaucoup voyagé avec le snowboard mais je me suis rendu compte que c'est toujours dans des pays riches qui fonctionnent apriori normalement.La Russie c'est différent, c'est sur que c'est un peu plus intimidant et différent de ce que j'ai pu voir à droite à gauche. Par contre je sais très bien que je ne vais pas en découvrir sa culture et ses moeurs à Sotchi. Ce que je vais voir à Sotchi ne reflétera pas du tout la Russie actuelle.
A lot of people say they don't really care about the Olympics but then everyone (brands/events) drops what they are doing and makes Olympics the priority (exmple. canceling the normal events we see during the season) Do you find that weird in any way?
You can be opposed to something without boycotting it. Take Method Mag for example who is not really into the the whole Olympic hype but are talking about it through me. The Olympics are just too big to ignore. I understand why some people reject the Olympics but it's just an unavoidable subject that there is plenty to say about.
On peut avoir un avis critique sur quelque chose sans pour autant le boycotter. Method par exemple qui n'est pas forcement dans le trip JO en parle maintenant à travers moi.Les JO restent quelque chose, selon moi, dont on ne peut pas trop éviter de parler simplement parce que c'est un trop gros morceau à ignorer. Beaucoup de monde rejette ces jeux et je comprends tout à fait pourquoi mais ça reste un sujet inévitable. Et assez intéressant parce qu'il y a plein de choses à dire.
Do you enjoy focusing on one thing for most of this season instead of running around filming and competing all over the place like in a normal season?
If you want to be competive in the pipe you need to ride a lot of pipe. You need to train maybe more than the other aspects of snowboarding to be good at it. For too many years I tried to be good at everything without really succeeding. To focus on one thing at a time is new for me and I am enjoying it. After the Olympics I am going to only film, I think.
Je me laise assez vite de faire une seule chose à la fois mais ce coup-ci c'est ma seule chance d'être un peu compétitif. Pour être bon en pipe il faut en faire beaucoup, peut être encore plus que dans d'autres domaines. Pendant trop d'années j'ai essayé d'être bon de partout sans vraiment réussir. Se concentrer sur une seule chose à la fois c'est nouveau pour moi et c'est assez cool. Quand je vais filmer après les jeux je ne ferai que ça je pense.
Do you think the Olympics are a sufficient format to represent snowboarding in total?
Snowboarding is one of the most difficult sports to put in a box and the Olympics will not be able to represent it in it's totality. On the other hand it's a cool sort of check-out on the current level of contest boarding. For example, for me the Salt Lake, Utah Olympics will always be a reference point of where snowboarding was at in 2002.
Le snowboard est surement le sport le plus difficile à définir et à mettre dans une case, donc non les jeux à eux seuls ne sont pas assez pour représenter ce que le snowboard est.Par contre c'est cool pour une petite update du niveau actuel en compéte classique. Par exemple Salt Lake restera toujours une référence pour moi de ce que le snowboard était en 2002.
Do you think snowboarding can really benefit from the Olympics or is it more the Olympics that benefit from snowboarding?
If the conditions will be right, I think we will witness a spectacular competition. We can't ignore what the slopestyle riders are stomping these days. The level is just unbelievable. We will definitely have a large audience watching and there will be even more kids that will be fans of Stale Sandbech's and the rest of the slope riders after Sochi. They are definitely going to hype kids to get on a board for sure. And if people first get into boarding because of the Olympics they will surely go looking a bit further to find what snowboarding is all about.
Je pense que si les conditions sont bonnes on va voir une belle compétition. On peut pas être indifférent à ce que font les riders en slope aujourd'hui, le niveau qu'ils ont est juste incroyable. On va surement avoir une audience énorme et je pense qu'encore plus de kids seront fans de Stale Sandbeck et compagnie après Sotchi. Ca va donner aux jeunes l'envie de rider j'en suis sur. Et si les gens aiment les jeux ils iront creuser plus loin dans notre sport.
How do you estimate the commercialization of the sport as a whole and especially during the Olympics from your personal experience?
They certainly don't get the profile of what a "snowboarder" is, exactly right but thanks to the Olympics, snowboarding will reach more media, more people and I don't think that there is such a thing as bad promotion.
Certainement que l'image "type" du snowboarder n'est pas très juste mais le snowboard reste différent de toutes manières. Avec les jeux on touche plus de médias, plus de monde, je pense qu'il n'y pas de mauvaise pub.
Should we limit the valid amount of corks to be done during a contest to a maximum of two? Should everyone just step their game down a bit, so we don’t start where Aerial Skiing ended?
It's a freestyle sport! It's up to the individual to decide what he wants to do on his board. I think it's cool that dudes are throwing triples, even if it isn't really the essence of snowboarding. We can expect that snowboarders will be content doing 540's for decades. Big respect for what those guys are doing on their snowboards. It's up to each rider to stay creative and stylish while keeping up the technicality that the judges are expecting to see.
C'est une discipline libre! A toi de voir ce que tu veux en faire. Je trouve ça cool que les gars fassent des triples, même si l'essence du snowboard n'est pas ça on ne peut pas se contenter de faire des 540 en contest pendant des décennies… J'ai énormément de respect pour ce que font les gars aujourd'hui. A chacun d'essayer de rester créatiatif et stylé malgré l'aspect technique que les juges souhaitent voir.
Do you think snowboarders are "doping" or taking steriods? Would you consider "energy drinks" a performance enhancing drugs?
No, that's why I think our sport is still cool and will stay that way. I think we are far from all that shit that is affecting the other sports. There are certainly drugs that were going around at one point or another, but certainly not ones that improve your performance. When we party hard we are simply putting sticks in our spokes, it doesn't help our riding. Energy drinks don't really help for much besides some sugar and a caffeine blast to help getting through those sleepy moments.
Non c'est pour ça que notre sport est encore cool et le restera. Je pense qu'on est très loin de toute cette merde qui touche tant de sports. Il y a surement quelques drogues qui ont tourné à un moment ou à un autre mais certainement pas dans le but d'améliorer des performances. Quand on fait la fête on se met tout simplement des bâtons dans les roues, on n’améliore pas sa façon de rider. Les énergie drinks n'aident probablement en rien à part peut être à te donner un peu de sucre et un petit shot de caféine dans les moments difficiles.
Where would you like to see snowboarding go, regarding contests especially?
I think the main problem is the lack of structure. There are a mulitude of contests left and right that belong to different organizations. Ideally we would have our own federation that organized a majority of the contests. Currently in France there is basically no organization running snowboarding for the youth in France. I am not saying contests are the only way to promote snowboarding but it is an option. I remember when I was young my snowboard club brought us all over France to do little contests which was a great opportunity. At that time contests were run by a snowboard association so budgets were spent in our interest.
On the other hand, I think we can do alot of good locally but I am under the impression that not much is going on around my area. Until now I have contributed little to my sport but that's something that I want to get involved with in the future.
All these questions are complex, there is no miracle solutions. Snowboarding has already reached an incredible level. I think it's nuts that all these people can earn a living from snowboarding. Snowboarding is still young and I hope it keeps heading in the right direction.
Je pense que le plus gros problème est qu'il n'y a pas de réelle structure. Il y a une multitude de contests à droite à gauche qui appartiennent à différentes organisations. L'idéal serait d'avoir notre propre fédération et d'articuler la majorité des compétitions autour de ça. Aujourd'hui il n'y a pratiquement plus aucune organisation pour les jeunes en France. Je ne dis pas que la compétitions soit la seule façon de promouvoir notre sport mais ça reste une solution. Je me souviens quand j'étais gosse mon club m'amenait partout en france pour faire les petites compétes et c'était déjà une super chance. A l'époque ces compétitions étaient gérées par une association de snowboard et donc chaque budget était dépensé dans notre intérêt.
A l'inverse je pense que localement on peut faire beaucoup de trucs et j'ai l'impression qu'il ne se passe plus grand chose vers chez moi. Jusqu'à maintenant j'ai très peu contribué à mon sport et c'est quelques choses que j'aimerais faire à l'avenir.
Toutes ces questions sont complexes, il n'y a pas de solutions miracles. Le snowboard est déjà arrivé à un niveau assez incroyable, je trouve ça fout que tant de monde puisse vivre de notre sport. Le snowboard est encore jeune, j'espère qu'il va continuer à se mettre en place et dans le bon sens…
Did you have any doubt about competing in the Olympics? Why or Why not?
As a snowboarder, no, but as an athlete, yes. The price tag on the Sochi Games is 34 billion euros. It drives me crazy to think about that. It makes me think these games are not legitimate. So much money spent on what? Who is benefiting from this? Olympic values have been lost, it's ugly to have reached this level of nonsense. Participating in these games is in some sense endorsing all that and it makes me quite uneasy. But, hey I'm not there yet, there's still time to turn back if I'm not feeling it. Sometimes to mock the infamous "Road to Sochi" I think about hitchhicking all the way, but I don't have the balls to do it. Maybe on the way back...
En tant que snowboarder non. Mais en tant qu'athlète olympique oui. Les jeux de Sochi ont couté 34 milliard d'euros. Ca me rend fou de penser à ça, je pense que ces jeux ne sont pas légitimes. Les valeurs olympiques se sont volatilisées, c'est moche d'en arriver à ce degré de non sens. Participer à ces jeux c'est quelque part cautionner tout ça et ça me met très mal à l'aise. Mais bon je n'y suis pas encore, il sera toujours temps de faire machine arrière si je ne le sens pas. Pour me moquer de ce fameux "road to sochi" et peut être revendiquer quelques trucs j'avais penser à aller là-bas en stop depuis chez moi, mais je crois que j'ai pas assez de couilles pour ça. Je me ferai peut être le retour...
How much of you going to the Olympics is an obligation to your nation? Does it feel at all like the draft for the army and your country is going into battle and it's your duty to go?
I don't have an undivided love for my nation but I am French and I would love to make the people of my country happy.
Je n'ai pas d'amour immodéré de la patrie mais je reste français et j'adorerais faire plaisir au gens ici.
What do you think the main reason is that the riders still have not successfully united to change or affect the FIS running the qualifiers?
Another tough question. The FIS has solid reigns on our involvment and it's dificult to change their role that they have maintained. I am not well versed on the topic because I am not involved in trying to change anything, unlike some other riders. I know that Terje wishes we pushed for change more but when we are busy trying to reach our goals and focus on our snowboarding it's hard to find time to apply to these issues.
Encore une question bien complexe. La FIS à les reins solides et c'est très difficile de lui faire changer son fonctionnement. Je ne suis pas assez calé sur le sujet simplement parce que je ne fais rien pour changer ça, comme beaucoup d'autres snowboarders concernés. Je sais que Terje regrette que nous ne soyons pas plus impliqués à ce niveau là. Mais quand on est concentré sur ses objectifs et sur le snowboard pur c'est dur de trouver le temps pour ces questions.
Do you think it's fair that people threaten to boycott the Olympics for the way the host nation acts politically, environmentally or towards their people in general?
Yes, I think as an athlete we have a responsibility and it is important not to support something which we do not agree with. I think a host nation must be exemplary and Russia is not on several points. But maybe these games will do more good to the Russians that we think. Some things are already changing over there due to all the international attention. It would be a shame to boycott Sochi and thus affecting all the people and athletes involved because of the Russian hostile political policy.
Oui je pense qu'en tant qu'athlète on a une part de responsabilité et c'est important de ne pas cautionner quelque chose avec laquelle on n’est pas d'accord. Je pense qu'une nation hôte se doit d'être exemplaire et la Russie ne l'est pas sur plusieurs points. Mais peut être que ces jeux vont faire plus de bien aux Russes que ce que l'on pense, certaines choses sont déjà en train d'évoluer là-bas... C'est peut être dommage de boycotter Sochi et donc tout un peuple à cause de la politique hostile Russe.
We won’t ask questions about gay rights in Russia, because they might be used against you as soon as you are in Sochi. (Yes, we do assume that Vladimir is checking the Method site regularly.)
Policies and standards of many countries offend me more than that issue but it is true that their laws seem crazy from our point of view, especially from a host nation of the Olympics.
Les politiques et les moeurs de beaucoup de pays me choquent plus que ça mais c'est vrai que ça parait fou de notre point de vue, surtout encore une fois concernant un pays organisateur des JO.
