The Eight Project Crowdfund

This project really deserves your attention: OG snowboard photographer Gonzalo Manera needs your help to finish Volume 2 of THE EIGHT, one of the greatest books in and about snowboarding today. Funding this project is not only about doing Gonzalo or yourself a favor, but helping to create a milestone of snowboarding culture. The book is made without any ads or sponsors and it's only focus is to picture the aesthetics of snowboarding, which is why Carlos and the people involved need your help.  Go check out their Indiegogo page for more info.

Here is the official text:
My name is Gonzalo Manera and I’m an action and lifestyle photographer based in Madrid. I have been snowboarding for over 22 years (more than half my life!) and I love it deeply. It has given me so much that I wanted to give back to the sport. In 2013 I created The Eight with that idea in mind.

On one side I wanted to offer the photographers a completely free outlet to show their photography to the world. On the other side I also wanted to have every snowboarder enjoy the best photography in the world. My main goal with the project is to inspire people to go out to the mountains and get more creative there and hopefully throughout their lives as well.

The book

Each book features eight photographers (thus the name!) and each has a number of pages to show their work as they envisioned it, without any editorial or creative constrains. This is the real value of the book, photographers showing their vision to the world on their own way, through their own eye.

The books are printed on the best quality paper for photography and we keep the price low so everyone can afford it. The book quality is amazing and we want it to be on people’s book collections for years to come. Be a part of snowboarding history.

If someone still can’t afford to purchase the books they always have the free digital version so nobody is left out. The goal is to have every snowboarder enjoy amazing photography, right?

These are all the book details:

  • 132 pages
  • Offset-printed and perfect bound
  • Full color on uncoated paper
  • Printed in Europe
  • Cover. Rives Design Bright White 250gr.
  • Interior. Olin Absolute White 160gr.
  • Size. 185mm x 245mm / 7.28in x 9.65in

The Black Volume

On November 2013 we released the Black Volume, our first book. We printed 1,500 copies of it. Since the book has no sponsors or ads we had to finance the whole thing out of our own pockets and it was a huge investment. The idea was to finance the new book with the sales of the previous one, but as happy as we are with the how things have gone we haven't sold nearly as many as we would have needed. If you want to check it out you can download the Black Volume here. The photographers who were featured on the Black Volume are:

  • Dean Blotto Gray
  • Neil Hartmann
  • Carlos Blanchard
  • Cyril Müller
  • Daniel Blom
  • Jérôme Tanon
  • Matt Georges
  • Thomas Stöckli

The work on this book is amazing and each photographer gave a very personal and different look on snowboarding. We still have many copies of the Black Volume and we are offering a few perks with this volume in them. These two photos below are real photos, not mockups.

Funding & timeline

The funding we need is 12,000€. Most of it is for printing expenses and shipping. the rest is for design and layout of the book, web development, etc. The numbers might shift a little bit depending on the shipping costs to different countries but this is more or less how we are spending the money:

  • 8,000€ are for printing expenses. Good paper is expensive!
  • 1,500€ are for design, layout and web development
  • 2,500€ are for shipping

The timeline for this project is easy as we have a lot of things done. Most of the photographers have already submitted their content, so when the campaign gets funded we have to finish putting all the content together and send it to print. The printer takes usually less than a month, so we’ll be ready to ship by early May, 2015. That's just at the end of the season, so with the book you will get enough energy to make it through the summer!
