Ever heard of Atreebutes? Well, think of a clothing company, but imagine that there are no employees, no 40-hour working week… In fact, this company doesn’t even have a landline phone connection, mainly because there is no "head office“ with a jack to plug the telephone into. This company's conference room is in the woods, in knee-deep powder. There is no CFO to report to and the board of directors is the kind you strap into. There is no PR agency to make them sound good and there are no polling firms to do "core market research“ to find out what’s going to be next season’s hot color or how snug or loose the pants should be.
Instead of employees, there are talented friends living across the globe, contributing to all aspects of the brand with great passion exponentialized by raw talent. This crew of longtime friends not only own the company together but are passionately involved in each product, from conceiving an idea to its inception. They even pack the boxes and personally send them out to make sure things get done right. Time spent in the company is not considered work but a pleasure. Welcome to Atreebutes.
Atreebutes is Frederik Kalbermatten and Nicolas Muller's newest endeavor, up on its feet and taking its first steps. I cannot describe their collection with such tired, played-out adjectives as "sick", "rad" or "awesome", Atreebutes is purely original and shows the character of the characters behind it.
The production is limited and sustainable. This is a crew with ethics who stand behind what they make, a crew for whom product serves as a mode of self-expression. If you feel you are original and tired of gear with limited originality that is mirrored across the world with international distribution and duplicated by unimaginative brands whose sole motivation is the bottom line, then Atreebutes is for you. These guys not only stepped out of the box, they threw the whole damn thing in the recycling bin, refusing to set themselves boundaries or constraints. Atreebutes believes in sustainability, just like many other companies also claim to, but they are not doing the bare minimum just so that they can run a "green scheme". They actually produce the most carbon-neutral collection they possibly can. They realize that no matter how hard one tries, manufacturing always has some environmental impact, but at least they taking actual steps in the right direction. Don't let yourself be intimidated by the daunting task of unraveling the knot of modern society and ignore those who have thrown in the towel. You never know, just maybe they will be convinced to follow suit, if not by your actions then at least by your style. Fixing up the earth is the new cool!
Peep Atreebutes' "Touch Down" collection, and I'll let the images do the rest of the talking…
